I think that students who are curious, confident, joyful, and who believe in themselves as learners, are more likely to learn effectively, and develop healthy attitudes towards their education, and each other. I want to create a classroom culture that empowers each one of my students, by making their learning valued, visible, and accessible. I don't want them just to learn more - I want to create a culture of learning, with students at the center.
It feels like a far reach, but what would it look like to achieve it?
CuriosityWhat does it mean to be curious?
Is it about asking questions? Sure! But what about the answers? I think curious people take an open-minded approach to life in general, and they are ready to alter their opinions, based on their new experiences. |
ConfidenceI'm not talking about the false confidence that comes from being told you are great all the time, but the true confidence that comes from having struggled with something challenging, and succeeded. And believing that you can do it better next time.
Culture of LearningA culture of learning is one that promotes the 4Cs of education - critical-thinking and problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity - and makes students active learners, instead of passive receivers of information.

JoyA lot of ingredients are required to build a joyful classroom culture: interesting content, engaging delivery, nurturing inclusivity, valuing diversity, plus some community-building shared experiences to bind the whole thing together.
